The Independent Publishers Guild (IPG) has unveiled the shortlists for its Independent Publishing Awards 2023, with Bloomsbury shortlisted in eight out of 14 categories in what the organisation is hailing as a record year for nominations.
The 14 shortlists celebrate the “remarkable success” of the independent publishing sector in 2022 and feature 65 nominations across 40 companies, “comfortably the most in the 17-year history of the awards” according to the organisers.
Ten publishers have more than one place on the shortlists: Bloomsbury Publishing (in eight categories), Canongate Books (in three), David & Charles (three), Magic Cat Publishing (three), Renard Press (three), Bonnier Books (two), David Fickling Books (two), Duckworth Books (two), Oneworld (two) and Phoenix Publishing House (two).
Twelve of the companies appear on the shortlists for the first time: Belle Media, Bonnier Books, Book Brilliance Publishing, BookSource, Canongate Books, David Fickling Books, Duckworth Books, Guppy Books, Howgate Publishing, Moonflower Books, Neem Tree Press and The Do Book Co.
One final award, for the title of CPI Independent Publisher of the Year, will be chosen from a shortlist made up of the winners of the five Publisher of the Year categories.
That business will join an illustrious list of 15 previous Independent Publishers of the Year. All winners will be announced at a special gala lunch at the Oxo Tower in London on Wednesday 22nd March 2023.
IPG chief executive Bridget Shine said: “It makes us very proud to present a record number of companies and individuals on the 2023 Independent Publishing Awards shortlists. Our judges were hugely impressed by the quality and quantity of entries, which reflect the remarkable achievements of IPG members and the inspirational people who work there. Despite all the challenges thrown at it in 2022, independent publishing is as resilient and innovative as ever, with incredible diversity and depth. Commiserations to the excellent publishers and people who didn’t make these exceptional shortlists, and the very best of luck to all those who did.”
