Bloomsbury has acquired an "intensely emotional" autobiographical debut novel to publish in Summer 2019.
In a "heated" auction, Bloomsbury acquired UK & Commonwealth rights to Let’s Hope for the Best by Carolina Setterwall from Astri von Arbin Ahlander of the Ahlander Agency in a "major" two-book deal. Just published in Sweden, the book has since sold in 15territories in two weeks.
Let’s Hope for the Best tells the story of Carolina, a young mother facing the sudden death of her partner, Aksel. Alternating between the past and present, it recounts in sparse and intense prose the story of their relationship, how the couple met, fell in love and formed a family, and then explores what remains of that family once Aksel is gone.
Setterwall said she was "incredibly honoured" and "extremely proud" to be published by Bloomsbury and for her novel to reach UK readers.
"I wrote Let’s Hope For The Best during a year of solitary nights as my son was sleeping in his bed next to mine, and to be honest, words can’t express my emotions at this moment."
Publishing director Alexis Kirschbaum said: "Let’s Hope for the Best has all of the qualities of a book I love to publish. It’s a beautifully written, emotionally brave, intimate, accurate, taut literary novel, with huge breakout potential. I am incredibly excited to be publishing it."
Let’s Hope for the Best will be a super-lead title for Bloomsbury, supported by a major marketing and publicity campaign.
