Bloomsbury has pledged to work with the Woodland Trust for three years, following a donation the publisher made to sponsor a one-acre grove in Surrey.
Alongside wider goals to measure and reduce their carbon emissions, Bloomsbury is supporting the Woodland Trust in the work they do to preserve British woodland.
The donation has been made to assist with the ongoing care and management of 750 newly planted trees at Langley Vale Wood in Epsom. The publisher will make further donations to support the trust's projects and tree planting.
Nigel Newton, Bloomsbury's c.e.o, said: “We wish to support the Woodland Trust in their work to protect and increase woodlands and biodiversity across the UK. There are clear environmental benefits to planting trees, alongside the carbon absorption we hope our donations will help preserve British woodland. Bloomsbury has committed to work with The Woodland Trust for two further years and we look forward to collaborating on projects in the future.”
A spokesperson for the trust said: “At the Woodland Trust we are delighted that Bloomsbury has chosen to support our work protecting, restoring and creating woodland. We look forward to working with the team further at this vital time for woods and trees which are at the frontline of the fightback against the climate crisis and the nature crisis as they lock up carbon and create homes for wildlife.”
The publisher has also teamed up with Reforest'Action, a forest creation enterprise, making donations to several of their projects, planting trees around the world to actively support reforestation, increased biodiversity and carbon absorption. In addition, the publisher has sponsored the preservation of more than 8,900 trees in 2021. All 725 members of staff across Bloomsbury’s global offices have been given a code to plant 10 trees via the Reforest’Action projects Bloomsbury is sponsoring in Guinea, Peru and Indonesia.
Jude Drake, head of sustainability at Bloomsbury, said: “We had such an overwhelming response from staff when we announced plans to increase our sustainability efforts. It is a subject that people really care about and so many wanted to be involved. While we have a lot of work to do from a business and operations point of view, this was a small way to make people feel included on our journey to a greener way of being as a company.”
