Bloomsbury has concluded a deal with Qatar Foundation and Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) to establish a new scientific journal publishing house, to be based in Doha. Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Journals (BQFJ) will publish scientific research on subjects including medical,
physical, engineering, Islamic and social sciences and the arts.
The development was announced in a trading update for the year ending 31st December, in which Bloomsbury said its trading for 2009 is "in line" with management’s expectations. Period-end cash for the Group is likely to be in the region of £35m.
The publisher said 2009 sales were "excellent", adding that the Bloomsbury Professional division, which was acquired as Tottel Publishing in July last year, "performed well and in line with expectations".
Sales of the box set of the seven Harry Potter titles were "particularly strong", with the publisher also citing the successes of Channel 4 tie-in River Cottage Everyday by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and The Fat Duck Cookbook by Heston Blumenthal. It also hailed The Guernsey Literary and
Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows; The Suspicions of Mr Whicher by Kate Summerscale; The Last Fighting Tommy by Harry Patch and Richard Van Emden; Ordinary Thunderstorms by William Boyd; Storms of my Grandchildren by James Hansen; and Methland by Nick Reding.
The preliminary results for the year ended 31st December 2009 will be announced on 30th March.
