<p>Bookselling veteran John Thwaites was among five head office managers to be made redundant by Blackwell's this week. The respected retail director, who previously managed Blackwell's flagship Oxford Broad Street and Waterstone's London Gower Street shops, lost his job along with two operations staff and two marketing category managers.
In an effort to combat flat sales across its shops, Blackwell's has merged its sales, operations and marketing departments to focus better on the flagships located in city centre locations, academic and specialist stores. The unified sales and marketing team reports to Michael Neil, who becomes sales and marketing director. David Prescott, who worked for Thwaites, will report to Neil. Head of marketing Helen Jones will remain in her role.</p>
