Former US president Bill Clinton and James Patterson are collaborating on a novel, publishing with Cornerstone, called The President is Missing. The book, drawing on Clinton's experience in the White House, will be his first novel.
Susan Sandon, divisional managing director at Penguin Random House UK acquired UK and Commonwealth (excluding Canada) and exclusive European rights in a deal struck with Robert Barnett of Williams & Connolly, to publish with Century in hardcover, e-book, and audiobook in June 2018. Simultaneously Knopf, Clinton's publisher, and Little Brown, Patterson's publisher, will jointly publish the title in North America.
The President is Missing will be informed by "details only a President can know", according to Cornerstone, and offer readers "a unique amalgam of intrigue, suspense and behind-the-scenes global drama from the highest corridors of power".
Clinton said he had been a long-time fan of Patterson and was looking forward to drawing on his experience in the White House to inform the project.
"Working on a book about a sitting President – drawing on what I know about the job, life in the White House, and the way Washington works—has been a lot of fun," he said. "And working with Jim has been terrific. I’ve been a fan of his for a very long time.”
Patterson said: "Working with President Clinton has been the highlight of my career, and having access to his first-hand experience has uniquely informed the writing of this novel.
"I’m a story-teller, and President Clinton’s insight has allowed us to tell a really interesting one. It’s a rare combination – readers will be drawn to the suspense, of course, but they’ll also be given an inside look into what it’s really like to be President.”
Sandon said she was "privileged" to be publishing the collaboration. "The huge international success of President Clinton's memoir, My Life, demonstrates his immense popularity and superior writing skills: Jim's worldwide bestsellerdom and reputation is second to none. This unprecedented collaboration with its compelling mix of insider knowledge and edge-of-the-seat suspense is utterly irresistible.”
