Big Green Bookshop prepares for cashmob

A cashmob event will take place at The Big Green Bookshop in London’s Wood Green this Sunday (16th October).

The ‘mob’ has been organised by Richard McKeever who runs a community website for Bowes Park and Bounds Green and will involve a group of people, rallied through social media, entering the shop at 2pm armed with a £10 note to spend in the store.

Cashmobbing, the sister of “flash-mobbing”, began in New York as a way of supporting local businesses.

McKeever said: “The purpose is primarily to support valued local businesses and also to provide another chance for locals to meet up in a fun environment. The first Haringey cashmob supported the traders at Harringey Market where over 70 people turned up in the rain and the idea has spread across North London and elsewhere.”

Simon Key, co-owner of The Big Green Bookshop, said he was delighted by the idea and grateful of the support from his local community.

He said: “We are extremely honoured to have been chosen. After we heard about it we decided that we’d try and make it a really special occasion, so we’re going to try and put on some entertainment as a way of saying thank you to those people who come along. There’ll be mince pies and mulled wine and with a bit of luck some other treats too.”
