The Big Green Bookshop is marking the scrapping of the iconic decade-long Waterstone's three for two offer by launching its own.
For one day only (10th September) the London independent bookshop based in Wood Green will be offering its customers three books for the price of two.
However, unlike Waterstone's promotion on selected books, the indie is offering customers three for two on any of its stock, including its second hand range, which it will launch tomorrow.
Simon Key, co-owner of the indie, said: "Well, after 10 long, long years Waterstone's has announced it is going to stop doing the three for two offer. Flipping 'eck. We couldn't let this pass without marking the occasion in some way . . . I will not be stickering any books though, for that would be foolhardy."
Key, a former Waterstone's employee, said it was a way to encourage people into the bookshop.
He added: "I was at Waterstone's when the promotion started and it was very exciting. But to begin with it was 50 carefully chosen books that Waterstone's wanted to promote and of course sales of those books rocketed. Then it got bigger, and it ended up being something that publishers had to buy to get in and it did not add value to the books."
