Oxford Reading Tree’s Biff, Chip and Kipper books will be adapted into a CBeebies live-action drama series.
The series will be developed by BBC Children’s in-house scripted development production team and based on the characters created by Roderick Hunt and Alex Brychta. The series is set to air in autumn 2020, and will consist of 30 episodes, each lasting 11 minutes.
The reading scheme was founded in 1986 by Oxford University Press and is currently used to teach reading and writing in 80% of the UK’s primary schools. The latest series, Explore with Biff, Chip and Kipper, was published in 2018.
OUP director of primary literacy Andrea Quincey said: “We are thrilled that the world of Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy the dog is going to be brought to life by the BBC and that a whole new generation of children and their families will be entertained and amused by the adventures of the Robinsons and their friends.”
The books have sold 412,625 copies for £2.8m through BookScan and are frequently ranked in the top ten of children’s favourite characters. The series has been translated into 14 languages and the books have been read by more than 30 million children since their inception.
