Bengono Bessala is joining the William Collins team as commissioning editor on the 1st July, reporting to the imprint’s publishing directors, Arabella Pike and Myles Archibald.
Bessala is moving from her current role in the business as marketing and publicity manager for Harper Inspire. She joined HarperCollins in 2014 as one of the first recruits of the traineeship scheme for Black, Asian and minority ethnic applicants. Through this, she joined HQ before securing a role as marketing assistant with Fourth Estate and William Collins. After a maternity contract as digital marketing manager with HQ, she left the business, before returning in 2018 to join the newly created Harper Inspire imprint.
In 2020, she was chosen as a Bookseller Rising Star and she is also a committee member of Elevate, the HarperCollins staff network supporting Black, Asian and minority ethnic employees. Her role will focus on the commissioning of fresh new writers with the aim of expanding the William Collins stable and reaching new audiences. She will also manage the marketing strategy for the imprint’s long-established Bibles list.
Bessala said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to bring new and diverse voices to a well-respected and established imprint. I can’t wait to get started. Additionally, managing the marketing of our successful Bible publishing will bring such variety to this new role."
William Collins and Fourth Estate executive publisher David Roth-Ey added: "I am thrilled to welcome Bengono to the William Collins commissioning team. Her verve and breadth of experience, both within and outside the book industry, make her a perfect addition to help expand William Collins’ publishing range."
