Beautiful Books collection wins short story award

<p>British writer Simon Van Booy has won the Frank O&#39;Connor Short Story Award for his collection, <em>Love Begins in Winter </em>(Beautiful Books), reports the Irish Examiner. The &euro;35,000 prize is the richest in the world for a short story collection.<br /><br />Speaking at the award ceremony, held at the Stack Theatre at the Cork School of Music, Van Booy said he was surprised and &quot;very, very grateful&quot; to have won. Beautiful Books publisher Simon Petherick described it as &quot;our first proper literary prize win&quot;.</p><p>Previous winners have included Haruki Murakami, Miranda July, Jhumpa Lahiri and Yiyun Li. The award is organised by the Munster Literature Centre with generous funding from Cork City Council.</p><p><em>Love Begins in Winter</em> was published by Beautiful Books in June 2009, paperback &pound;7.99 (ISBN 9781905636495).&nbsp;</p>
