The BBC have optioned Peter May's Lewis Trilogy for a new drama series.
According to the author, the broadcaster has optioned the crime trilogy, published by Quercus, to create three two-hour films for BBC4, with an adaptation of the first book in the series, The Blackhouse, currently under development.
The books - The Blackhouse, The Lewis Man and The Chessmen - are set in the Outer Hebrides. The Blackhouse sees a a detective sent back to the area where he grew up to investigate the murder of a man who bullied him at school.
May told the Scotsman that he understood Scots Gaelic channel BBC Alba would have involvement with the production. A spokesperson for the BBC said the project was in the early stages of development.
Last week, the BBC said it was producing an adaptation of the late Scottish author Iain Banks' book, Stonemouth, which will also be filmed in Scotland. The BBC has also adapted Ann Cleeves' Scottish crime books, published by Macmillan, for television, with two series of "Shetland" starring Douglas Henshall airing on BBC One, and a third in production.
