Barnes & Noble reports strong Christmas sales

<p> Barnes &amp; Noble has had its best Christmas trading in its bookshops in more than a decade.<br /><br />For the nine weeks to 1st January, store sales were up 8.2% to $1.1bn. Like for like sales at the bookstore were up 9.7%, its best bricks and mortar performance for more than 10 years. Total website sales were up 67% year on year to $228.5m. Like for like online sales were up 78%. Barnes &amp; Noble said the sales were driven by its Nook e-book reader as well as better than expected hardback sales.<br /><br />William Lynch, c.e.o. of Barnes &amp; Noble said: &ldquo;NOOKcolor was one of the most sought-after gifts this holiday season and has quickly become the bestselling device at Barnes &amp; Noble.&nbsp; And, even more encouraging to us, NOOK&rsquo;s popularity is helping to drive new sales at both our stores and online, where 60% of NOOKcolor owners are new customers of our Barnes &amp; Noble digital bookstore.&rdquo; </p>
