William Heinemann and #Merky Books editorial director Tom Avery is joining Tate Publishing as its new publishing director.
Avery begins his new role on 1st June, developing key areas of Tate Publishing’s list, including its Tate of Mind, children’s and Tate Collective titles.
He said: “I am enormously excited to be joining Carmel and the team at Tate Publishing. It is a list I have admired for many years, and as someone with an active interest in art and its possibilities, believe the role represents an extraordinary opportunity. I am looking forward to helping take the work of Tate to readers across the UK and around the world.”
Avery has also previously worked at Jonathan Cape and Vintage during his publishing career and, in 2018, launched #Merky Books with grime star Stormzy.
Carmel Allen, c.e.o. at Tate Enterprises, said: "We are delighted to welcome Tom to the team. Tom is passionate about bringing new voices to the table. He co-founded and launched #Merky Books with Stormzy, which provides a home for a fresh generation of writers. Tom’s outstanding experience and approach to diversity and inclusivity, alongside his enthusiasm for Tate, will be invaluable in the coming years as we move forward into a new era."
Avery succeeds John Stachiewicz, who is stepping down after six years as publishing and business director at Tate Enterprises. He said: “I’ve had a wonderful time at Tate and am thrilled that I’ll be handing over to Tom, whose reputation I admire and who I have no doubt will take the business to new heights.”
