Author Solutions has said no legal action has been lodged against it, despite a New York law firm's announcement that it is investigating the company.
Lawyers Giskan Solotaroff Anderson & Stewart LLP posted a message on its website yesterday (5th March) which said the company was "investigating the practices of Author Solutions and all of its brands" including AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Trafford, Xlibris, Inkubook and Wordclay.
The law firm said it was carrying out the action because "authors using Author Solutions have complained of deceptive practices, including enticing authors to purchase promotional services that are not provided or are worthless, failing to pay royalties, and spamming authors and publishing blogs/sites with promotional material".
However, Penguin-owned Author Solutions told The Bookseller: "There is no legal action and it is not our policy to comment on speculation. Since 2002, Author Solutions has successfully enabled over 170,000 authors to self-publish more than 200,000 titles."
The law firm has asked authors who have self-published with the company or any of its brands who feel they have been "the victim of deceptive practices" to contact them.
Penguin said it would not be commenting separately.
