Penguin-owned Author Solutions Inc (ASI) has opened a self-publishing imprint called Partridge in India as it seeks to expand internationally.
Penguin bought Author Solutions in July for $116m (£73.3m) with Penguin c.e.o. John Makinson at the time saying "self-publishing has moved into the mainstream of our industry".
Now the Author Solutions platform has opened up to the Indian writing community, with Penguin saying it will monitor Partridge titles "with hopes of picking up authors for the Penguin list".
Andrew Phillips, president and chief executive of Penguin Books India, said: "Since Author Solutions joined the Penguin family, we have been focused on their international expansion and India is an obvious starting point, given the active and enthusiastic writing community. I hope the new platform will substantially increase the number of authors in India. We will be monitoring Partridge titles with hopes of picking up authors for the Penguin list. I have no doubt that Partridge will be a huge success."
Kevin Weiss, president and c.e.o. of Author Solutions Inc, added: "We have been watching this market for some time and see more and more authors looking for publishing and marketing services that meet industry standards but are affordably priced."
The books can be published in both print and digital and authors are offered editing, designing, illustration, print formatting, publicity and marketing and distribution through online channels through the service.
Formed in 2007, ASI reports approximately $100m of revenues in 2011, growing at an average annual rate of 12% over the past three years, with its revenues stemming primarily from services to authors.
