Australian debut to Virago

Virago has acquired UK rights in the debut novel of Australian screenwriter and director Shirley Barrett.

North American rights for the book, titled Rush Oh!, were bought by Little, Brown and Australian rights were bought by Picador.

Set in 1908 near the township of Eden on the South Coast of New South Wales, Rush Oh!  is a story about family, fish, animals and trying to come to terms with life’s disappointments. It is also a celebration of an extraordinary episode in Australian history when a pod of killer whales and a family of whalers formed a fond, unique allegiance.

Grace Heifetz, Barrett’s primary agent at Curtis Brown Australia, described Rush Oh! as "a wonderfully original novel from a brilliant Australian voice” with a "vivid and enchanting story”.

Barrett said: "I could not be more delighted to have my first novel find its home with such wonderful publishers as these, whose books I have read since girlhood. The enthusiasm they've shown for Rush Oh! has been head-spinning - I never dared hope for such an outcome."
