The winner of the largest award for children’s and young people’s literature, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, will be announced next week on 24th March. There are ten candidates nominated from the UK, including David Almond, Quentin Blake, Anthony Browne, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, Eva Ibbotson, Michael Morpurgo, Seven Stories and Aidan and Nancy Chambers.
The prize is valued at about €480,000. Previous winners of the award include Philip Pullman in 2005 and Sonya Hartnett in 2008.
This year 153 candidates from 60 countries worldwide have been nominated for the award, which is awarded annually to one or more authors, illustrators, oral storytellers or promoters of reading. The prize aims to strengthen and increase interest in children’s and young people’s literature globally.
