Assallah Tahir is joining Simon & Schuster UK as commissioning editor in the Adult Non-fiction department next year.
Tahir makes the move from Penguin General, where she has been since 2017. She has worked as assistant editor across Fig Tree and Viking, where she acquired 2022 title, Preventable: The Politics of Pandemics and How to Stop the Next One by Professor Devi Sridhar. Other authors she has worked with include Dolly Alderton, Meera Sodha, Jonathan Coe and Sathnam Sanghera. Alongside her editorial responsibilities, she is passionate about inclusion and representation in the publishing industry, and is a mentor on the WriteNow scheme. In her new role, she will report to Holly Harris, publishing director of Adult Non-fiction.
Commenting on her appointment, Tahir said: "I have had a wonderful time at Penguin General working with friends, colleagues and authors I admire immensely. While I am sad to leave them I am thrilled to be joining Holly and the incredibly talented team at Simon & Schuster – who publish some of the best non-fiction in the business – at such an exciting time for the company. I can’t wait to work with the team to bring in non-fiction that is fresh, urgent and enlightening."
Harris said: "Assallah is brilliant and I can’t wait for her to join us. S&S non-fiction is in a very exciting place at the moment, with a slew of recent bestsellers, a bumper 2021 to look forward to, and the impending launch of Gallery Books UK. Alongside the talented editors in place here, I know Assallah is going to bring in some fabulous books and take our list to new heights. She has great ideas and instincts, and we are really looking forward to welcoming her to the team."
The S&S UK Adult Non-fiction team comprises: Holly Harris, publishing director; Ian Marshall, deputy publishing director; Fritha Saunders, editorial director; Fran Jessop, senior project editor; Kaiya Shang, project editor for Non-fiction and Scribner; Kat Ailes, project editor; and Sophia Akhtar, editorial assistant.
