Apple appoints UK iBookstore manager

Georgina Atwell has been appointed iBookstore manager for the UK. Atwell, who was formerly online director at Dorling Kindersley, joined Apple in July. Atwell left DK's parent Penguin in October last year, and was most recently an independent digital consultant.

Apple did not respond to phonecalls or emails about the appointment, though the move clearly marks attempts by the electronics company to beef-up its books proposal.

Apple launched the iBookstore in the UK in May with just publishers Hachette UK, Penguin, HarperCollins and Pan Macmillan supplying books for sale through the store. It has yet to sign up any additional publishers, with estimates suggesting that it is carrying around 4,500 paid-for titles from these houses. Amazon.co.uk's Kindle store by contrast launched earlier this month and already offers more than 400,000 titles.
