Animal Kingdom wins Educational Writers' Award

A book about animals illustrated with infographics has won the 2014 Educational Writers’ Award.

The £2,000 prize was presented to Jon Richards and Ed Simkins for The World in Infographics: Animal Kingdom (Wayland) by Tristram Hunt, shadow secretary of state for education, at a ceremony yesterday (2nd December) at the House of Commons.

The judging panel – teacher Vanessa Casey, school librarian Aidan Higgins and author Anne Rooney – said of the book: “An outstanding book to engage any reader in this information age. More information is packed into its vivid, colourful pages than looks possible, all presented through brilliant, easy-to-read infographics. The whole book jumps out at you and is thoroughly engaging and informative.”

The award is run by the Authors’ Licensing & Collecting Society (ALCS), at whose winter reception the prize was presented, and the Society of Authors (SoA). It celebrates educational writing that inspires creativity and encourages students to read widely.
