Angry Robot has set up an e-book initiative to support independent bookshops, with the scheme enabling selected indies to offer the digital version of Angry Robot novels free to customers when they buy the physical paperback.
The Angry Robot Clonefiles scheme will be trialled first at Mostly Books, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, from tomorrow (4th July). Angry Robot will then roll out the scheme through other indies, with customers buying an Angry Robot novel and then being emailed the digital version of the book in the format of their choice.
Angry Robot UK sales manager Roland Briscoe set up the scheme with Mark Thornton of Mostly Books.
Briscoe said: "The Clonefiles programme grew out of a conversation with Mark at Mostly Books about how indie bookstores could better serve both print book and e-book customers. At Angry Robot we sometimes feel our customers are having to choose between a physical book and an e-format, when what probably suits them best is to have both in the same package.
"We've always been champions of DRM-free e-book publishing and we’re eager to experiment with new business and distribution models."
Mark Thornton of Mostly Books said: “As an indie bookshop, we offer a great browsing experience and discoverability and it is difficult to see really innovative ways that we can offer our customers a really valuable service with e-books. But this is a bold and brilliant idea we think our customers will get excited about. It really offers an imaginative solution that plays to all our strengths.”
