Angry Birds creator Rovio is moving into the YA publishing sector with a new pirate adventure series.
Storm Sisters is described as a “high action pirate adventure with a female twist”. It tells the story of five girls, aged 11 to 17, who sail the seas in 1780s looking for clues to why their parents died mysteriously.
Storm Sisters: The Sinking World, written by Finland-based author Mintie Das, will be published in late 2015 or early 2016 and will be quickly followed by the second title, Storm Sisters: The Frozen Seas.
The Sinking World is one of 11 being showcased at the Books at Berlinale event in Berlin, Germant, in February, which touts upcoming titles to film companies for possible adaptation.
“It’s thrilling to see Storm Sisters garnering so much attention before it even hits the shelves. It’s just wonderful to see that Berlinale is as excited by a girls’ action pirate series as we are,” said Laura Nevanlinna, Rovio’s publishing director. “To be a part of Berlinale shows us the exciting potential our new young adult series has both as a novel and a possible film.”
Rovio moved into book publishing in 2011 with an Angry Birds cookbook entitled Bad Piggies' Egg Recipes.
It has since expanded its books brand through partnerships with National Geographic and Nasa, as well as Angry Birds-branded physical books.
