Andersen Press is launching new children's series Mermaid School, written by Lucy Courtenay and illustrated by Sheena Dempsey, with a nationwide campaign and UK author tour.
The first book came out 6th February, priced £6.99, with the second, third and fourth instalment due out respectively May 2020, August 2020 and spring 2021. Abrams acquired the US rights and will publish the first in the series later this month.
The synopsis reads: "It is Marnie Blue’s very first day at Lady Sealia Foam’s Mermaid School, and she’s terrified. What if she can’t make any new friends, or if she’s asked to ride a seahorse? What’s more, her famous diva aunt Christabel was a notorious rebel at the same school, and got up to all sorts of naughtiness. Marnie is soon branded a troublemaker by her grumpy octopus music teacher and wants nothing more than to clam up. But when a fellow pupil finds herself in danger, it’s up to Marnie to show that daring runs in the family and swim to the rescue."
Highlights of the campaign include: a promotion with sport governing body Swim England, with an advertorial feature, social media, and a half-term promotion with 10,000 activity sheets distributed to leisure centres nationwide; a new school masterclass with online platform Authorfy in May, complete with video content and classroom resources. Andersen will also launch a new series website, with downloadable activity sheets, there will be quizzes and story writing tips; point-of-sale material for schools and bookshops including mermaid tail bookmarks, series posters and activity packs; excerpts in WRD magazine for readers aged eight to 14; giveaways on LoveReading4Kids and World Book Day UK; and a UK author and illustrator tour encompassing schools, bookshops and festivals,
