Publisher Andersen Press has teamed up with Touchpress to create a new app based on David McKee’s Elmer character.
The app, as yet untitled, will be an activity app and will launch this year for iPhone and iPad.
Louise Rice, executive producer at Touchpress, said working with Andersen was a “great opportunity to work with a publisher whose values we share to show how mobile devices can deliver an experience completely different but also entirely complementary to the print book. We want kids to "look up" when they use the iPad or iPhone rather than be locked into the screen”.
Touchpress also created the Disney Animated app, which tells the story of how Disney created its animated films and last year won a FutureBook Innovation Award for best adult digital book.
Elmer was published in 1989 and since then sales of books about the patchwork elephant have totalled 810,250 copies in the UK, according to Neilsen BookScan.
Last year Andersen Press launched an “Elmer’s Parade” campaign to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the brand, with a library competition and an exhibition of McKee’s artwork at the Illustration Cupboard in London.
Titles published in 2014 include Elmer: Signed 25th Anniversary Edition (clothbound h/b, £14.99), Elmer and the Monster (h/b £11.99), My First Elmer Collection (collection of four board books, £9.99) and Elmer's Treasury (padded h/b, £14.99).
