Amazon is trialling a range of "Kindle Kiosks" at selected airports and shopping centres in the US.
The first "kiosk" was spotted at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, coming in the form of a standalone machine which vends Kindle Fire tablets, Kindle e-readers and accessories.
An Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire: “We’re very happy with the customer response so far, and are excited to give customers another easy way to purchase accessories and also Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets.”
The move is seen as an attempt by Amazon to move into the physical retail space.
Meanwhile one of Britain’s biggest shareholders in Amazon, Google, Facebook and Apple has warned those companies not to be so aggressive in avoiding UK corporation tax following public anger over the issue last year.
James Anderson, manager of the £2.6bn Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust, said the American companies were taking risks by seeking to reduce their tax bills in this way.
Anderson told The Times: “We say to these companies, don’t overplay it…I think it is a huge mistake to be too aggressive. The danger is they become too unpopular. Jeff Bezos (c.e.o of Amazon) is very aware of that.”
