Amazon has said it took orders for more than 36.8 million items worldwide on Cyber Monday (2nd December), at a record-breaking rate of 426 a second.
The online retailer's post-Christmas announcement also placed heavy emphasis on the Amazon Prime free shipping service, which the retailer said gained over one million members worldwide in the third week of December.
Amazon also said it sold "millions" of Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablet devices this Christmas, but did not supply specific figures.
For Amazon.com only, the "holiday bestsellers" for e-books were said to be John Grisham's Sycamore Row, Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch and Markus Zusak's The Book Thief. No information was released for Amazon.co.uk titles.
Meanwhile over 150 Kindle Direct Publishing authors sold over 100,000 of their books in 2013, Amazon said, with Hopeless by Colleen Hoover and Wait for Me by Elizabeth Naughton among the big sellers.
