Amazon has reportedly begun signing up e-book content in Russia before launching in the country.
The e-commerce giant has been signing contacts with Russia’s largest publishing houses to supply e-books and later print books for Russian consumers, according to Publishing Perspectives.
Many Russians use Amazon to buy products, but they have to do so using a foreign version of the website. Amazon’s biggest rival in Russia is a website called Litres, which also sells e-books.
According to Publishing Perspectives, the Russian publisher Rosman has said it will supply 100 to 150 titles in digital in reference, children’s and YA to Amazon, with the possibility the number could double by the end of the year.
In April, Forbes magazine reported that Amazon had hired Arkady Vitrukas as its head of Kindle Content in Russia. Vitruk was the former publisher of ABC-Atticus, owned by current Waterstones owner Alexander Mamut.
