Amazon has backtracked on its decision to stop accepting Visa’s UK-issued credit cards over high fees, just two days before the policy was due to kick in.
In November the online retailer said the cost of accepting Visa credit card payments was "an obstacle for businesses striving to provide the best prices for customers" and said it would ban them from 19th January. No other credit cards, or Visa debit cards would have been included in the ban.
On 17th January the retailer announced the change would no longer take place while discussions with Visa continue.
A spokesperson told The Bookseller: “The expected change regarding the use of Visa credit cards on Amazon.co.uk will no longer take place on 19th January. We are working closely with Visa on a potential solution that will enable customers to continue using their Visa credit cards on Amazon.co.uk.”
However the spokesperson declined to say what kind of solution is being negotiated with Visa.
Amazon customers received an email explaining: "Should we make any changes related to Visa credit cards, we will give you advance notice. Until then, you can continue to use Visa credit cards, debit cards, Mastercard, American Express, and Eurocard as you do today".
In a previous statement Visa said the company was "very disappointed that Amazon is threatening to restrict consumer choice in the future".
Following Amazon’s announcement this week, a Visa spokesperson said: “Amazon customers can continue to use Visa cards on Amazon.co.uk after 19th January while we work closely together to reach an agreement."
