Amazon has partnered with an Italian bookshop chain Giunti al Punto to sell Kindle e-readers.
The deal will also see Amazon and Giunti open an online store together later this year, selling books, “physical media products” and toys through Amazon.it. Amazon will fulfill the online orders and customers will earn “Giunti points”, which can be converted into vouchers and spent in the physical bookstores.
The partnership will see Italian customers given five free e-books when they buy a kindle from any of the Italian book chain’s 170 stores.
It is the third agreement Amazon has struck with physical booksellers. The first was with Waterstones in the UK and the second with independent booksellers in America.
Martino Montanarini, c.e.o of Giunti, said: “The Giunti-Amazon agreement represents a milestone to advance the bookstore experience for our customers and promote reading in Italy, in any possible format.”
Jorrit Van der Meulen, vice president of Amazon Kindle, said: “Giunti, with its centenary history, and its bookstore chain, among Italy's best known and loved, continue to innovate on behalf of its customers. Amazon and Giunti share the same core values: customer obsession and a passion for reading.”
The Amazon.it Kindle Store offers more than 2.5 million books.
