Amazon in the US has launched its Kindle MatchBook programme, allowing readers to buy digital copies of physical books they have bought on the site for $2.99 or less.
More than 70,000 books are available through the service, with publishers including HarperCollins, Macmillan, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Wiley all making books available. Books published by Amazon Publishing are also included, and authors who publish via Kindle Direct Publishing who have physical books will also be able to enrol their titles.
The new programme was first announced in September, and Amazon originally said it had 10,000 titles available. Russ Grandinetti, vice-president for Kindle content, said: "MatchBook enrollment has grown from 10,000 to 70,000 titles in just a few weeks and we expect it will keep expanding rapidly in the months ahead."
People who bought physical books as far back as Amazon's launch in 1995 will be able to buy the Kindle versions, with the digital prices set at $2.99, $1.99, 99c or free.
