Amazon imprint holds author conference

Amazon imprint Thomas & Mercer is flying authors out to a party and conference in Seattle over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Writers who have a book published by the imprint in 2013 have been invited to a weekend-long conference over August 22-25th to give them chance to meet the Amazon publishing team, attend panels, socialise with fellow Thomas & Mercer authors and "explore Seattle".

The company, which has its global headquarters in Seattle, has offered to foot the cost of the hotel, The Westin in downtown Seattle, as well as pay for flights and travel expenses.

Over the course of the four days, authors will meet Amazon executives, attend workshops and lectures and a party in The Palace Ballroom. It is thought that this is the first Amazon author event of its kind, but that the occasion may become an annual fixture.

Thomas & Mercer is a mystery and thriller imprint described on Amazon’s publishing website as containing “first-rate fiction, from cosy mysteries to heart-stopping thrillers”. It has over 120 authors internationally.

Thomas & Mercer was launched by Amazon in May 2011, following hot on the heels of the Montlake Romance imprint announced earlier that month.

Last week, The Bookseller reported that in the UK, Amazon Publishing senior acquisitions editor Emilie Marneur made her first two acquisitions for the Thomas & Mercer thriller and mystery imprint, signing two novels from self-published author Mel Sherratt.

Marneur, who previously worked at the Amazon-owned Audible, acquired world English language rights for two books, Taunting the Dead which Sheratt had already self-released, and an unpublished book called Watching Over You. The deal was done with Madeleine Milburn at the Madeleine Milburn Literary, TV & Film Agency.
