Amazon.com has confirmed to Publishers Weekly that it is to remove free Kindle titles from its bestseller lists. Instead it will now publish two lists: one for paid books, and a second for free titles.
PW notes: "The date for the switch is vague—the rep would only say it will happen in 'a few weeks'—but the switch will certainly be noticed."
The trade journals reports that US publishers have been using free promotions to gauge interest in Kindle titles. "Now, with the list to be split up, one has to wonder if publishers will find free giveaways as valuable a promotion tool," notes PW.
