Publisher Alligator Books has launched a new division to publish "creative play" apps for children based on its licensed content. The move is in response, the company says, to the growth of digital publishing and iPad and smartphone use by parents and children.
Alligator publishes a range of activity books including sticker and colouring books, and the apps will act as "complementary virtual products" to its physical books. Neil Rodol, commercial director, said: "Publishing in the digital space is a natural step forward for the business. It allows us to maximise our assets."
Alligator plans to feature its apps in a new Alligator Creative Play Store. The company's existing products will be tagged with QR codes that, once scanned, will link consumers with the store.
The first app, released this month, is branded Me to You, featuring the Tatty Teddy character. The app will include a selection of creative play tasks including colouring in, sticker creation and scene-making activities. It has been developed by FairPlay Media's studio Gusto Games.
Alligator Books has signed a number of other licenses, and will announce the launch of further licensed and generic apps by the end of the year.
