Following its acquisition of Murdoch Books, Australian publisher Allen & Unwin will start publishing children’s books in the UK.
Angela Namoi, Allen & Unwin’s international children’s sales director, said the UK is a “hugely significant” market and that there are strong cultural links between the two countries.
“Australian and British children are influenced by many of the same things and their experiences and interests overlap,” she told The Bookseller.
The first books on the list will be published in March and will include A Flip-the-flap Dinosaur Tale by Jeanette Rowe and Let's Paint by Gabriel Alborozofor younger children, and On Two Feet and Wings for readers aged 11-14.
Later titles will include Maureen McCarthy's YA/crossover novel The Convent and the same author's YA tale Queen Kat, Carmel and St Jude Get a Life, in April. Allen & Unwin will also publish Welcome to My Country, by Laklak Burarrwanga, Dr Sarah Wright, Dr Sandie Suchet-Pearson and Dr Kate Lloyd, about life in a traditional Aboriginal community.
Allen & Unwin announced its acquisition of Murdoch in January this year for an undisclosed sum.
At the time, c.e.o. Robert Gorman said the acquisition would "add balance" to his company's publishing programme and allow Allen & Unwin to offer "the broadest range of books" to its customers around the world.
