Allen Lane will be publishing another title by Neil MacGregor, author of A History of the World in 100 Objects, this coming autumn, with the British Museum director taking a similar approach to shed new light on Shakespearean times.
Publishing director Stuart Proffitt bought world rights, excluding US, in the title, Shakespeare's Restless World, negotiating directly with the British Museum and the BBC. Viking will publish in the US. The book will be based on a 20-part series on BBC Radio 4 this spring, with Allen Lane to publish it as a £20 hardback on 27th September 2012.
In the book, MacGregor looks at 20 objects from Shakespeare's life and times, and uncovers the stories behind them, with the objects including a rapier and dagger, the worn garments of an unknown pedlar, and a medal depicting the map of the world.
The book also ties in with the British Museum's "Staging the World" Shakespeare exhibition, which will run from July to November this year.
