Alan Clifford killed in car crash

<p>Alan Clifford, co-founder and managing director of Methvens/Samedaybooks, was killed in a car crash in West Sussex on 27th December.</p><p>Clifford, who was 47, left Waterstone's to start up small bookselling chain Methvens in 1993. He led the company to flotation on AIM in 1997, and oversaw its rebranding as At its height the chain had 10 stores; it now operates from six sites, in Worthing, Godalming, Cobham, Hertford, Petworth and Gosport.</p><p>In 2004 it acquired Waterside Book Services, a supplier of books to ferries.
