Fourth Estate has bagged Please Yourself, an “inspirational, wise and forgiving” book from psychotherapist Emma Reed Turrell.
Associate publisher Helen Garnons-Williams acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Euan Thorneycroft at A M Heath. Please Yourself: How to Stop People Pleasing and Transform the Way You Live will be released in hardback in April 2021.
Its synopsis states: “Reed Turrell is a psychotherapist who works with people pleasers every day in her clinical practice: clients wrestling with the complicated dilemmas of a life in which you can’t please everyone, but you don’t yet have the permission you need to please yourself. In this groundbreaking and reassuring book, she presents an alternative to people-pleasing. Through the stories of people-pleasers across all walks of life she offers insights and techniques that will help readers understand themselves more fully and live more authentically. Her aim is to help us care better for others, without taking on their problems, through caring better for ourselves.”
Garnons-Williams said: “Please Yourself is a book that will resonate with so many people, both self-confessed people pleasers and those who might be surprised at the many guises people pleasing can take. Emma’s warmth, wisdom, humour and authority combine to create an invaluable guide to living a more authentic life.”
Reed Turrell said: “Modern life places more demands on us than ever before and it’s time to break the chains of people pleasing, to live our lives more authentically. I’m delighted to be working with 4th Estate to bring a touch of the therapist to people in their own homes and help them learn the life-changing art of pleasing yourself.”
