Bonnier Books UK is donating 1,000 Bear Grylls books to Manchester United Foundation, an education youth charity aligned with Manchester United Football Club.
Manchester United Foundation uses football to engage and inspire young people, working in some of the most socially challenging areas of Greater Manchester to deliver football coaching, educational programmes and personal development opportunities to them.
As many children in these areas will not have access to online educational resources at this time, with schools closed, the foundation has created physical activity and care packages to reach the children they regularly work with—and Bonnier Books UK has donated three titles from Bear Grylls’ roster of titles, suitable for children in key stages 1, 2 and 3.
Commenting on the move, Jane Harris, m.d. of Children’s Trade at Bonnier Books UK, said: "We are extremely proud to support the Manchester United Foundation and the incredible work it does with disadvantaged families. During times of crisis we often turn to books and now more than ever the importance of reading for pleasure is paramount.
"We hope that these books provide entertainment and education for young readers at this unusual time. We are very grateful for the support of our distributor GBS who have ensured a safe and speedy delivery of these titles."
Grylls said: "I’m proud to know that my books will play a small part in helping keep young people in Manchester entertained and motivated during this difficult time. Reading is the ultimate way to gain power, skills and knowledge and to explore new worlds. Those things are now more important than ever."
John Shiels, chief executive at Manchester United Foundation, commented: "We are extremely thankful for the generous donation of books by Bear Grylls and his team at Bonnier. They are a wonderful addition to our packs and will be hugely appreciated by the children and families we work with, offering a sense of escapism when it is most needed. Our team is doing all it can right now to continue helping our communities, and support like this enables us to go even further in making a difference to those who need it most."
