Meet the team behind The Bookseller, the business magazine of the book trade, bringing readers publishing industry news each week.


Philip Jones
Editor

I am editor of The Bookseller. I joined The Bookseller in 1996 under its then editor Louis Baum, and also worked for the magazine under two previous editors, Nick Clee and Neill Denny. I live in north London and have three children – Henry, Robin and Elijah.

Deputy Editor

I lead the team that deals with our in-depth coverage, company profiles, charts and data analysis and special issues, such as our London, Bologna and Frankfurt Book Fair Daily editions. I began my book trade career at Barnes & Noble in the US and worked at Blackwell's and BookSpeed in the UK, before joining The Bookseller in 2007.

Managing Director

I am managing director of Playbook Media, the company behind The Bookseller and its sister title The Stage. Prior to this, I was editor of The Stage for a decade, having also served as deputy editor, news editor and reporter on that publication. I'm also chair of the charity Get Into Theatre.

Rachel Foley-Scott
Deputy Managing Director

I am the deputy managing director of Playbook Media. I joined The Stage, one of the Playbook Media titles, in 2014 and started working on The Bookseller in 2020 as head of marketing. I began my publishing career at the University of Exeter Press followed by Informa.

Caroline Sanderson
Associate Editor

I compile the monthly New Titles: Non Fiction and occasionally other category previews. I also interview writers for the magazine. Outside of my Bookseller role, I am the editor of ALCS News, the monthly magazine of the Authors Licensing & Collecting Society; a regular chair of events for bookshops and at literary festivals; and the author of five published non-fiction books of my own!

Caroline Carpenter
Children's Editor & Deputy Features Editor

As children's editor, I lead on the company's children's coverage including compiling the monthly Children's Previews, programming The Bookseller Children's Conference and chairing the YA Book Prize. On the features side, I write and commission features in print and online, overseeing the editorial content for several of the magazine's Country and Regional Focuses. Before joining The Bookseller, I studied English and Creative Writing, interned at publishing houses, worked for a newspaper, and wrote a book.

News & Website Editor

I joined The Bookseller in 2024 and in my role I manage my team of reporters covering everything from book trade news to rights acquisitions, as well as overseeing the website. I spent most of my career in news journalism at a number of local newspapers, as well as a stint as world news editor at the Daily Express, before making the move to the world of books.

Lauren Brown
Deputy News Editor

I have worked at The Bookseller since 2022, first as a senior news reporter before covering maternity leave as the fiction previewer, as well as writing features, trade interviews, author interviews and guest editing the Libraries Focus. As of January 2026, I am deputy news editor, covering news spanning AI in the book trade, government policy effects on the creative industries, publishers' financials, career moves, imprint launches, trends in publishing and more.

As the deputy books editor, I spend a lot of time reading, writing and interviewing authors. I specialise in science fiction and fantasy, but I also love romance and have been known to dabble in non-fiction! I also chair the New Adult Book Prize and spend a lot of time writing about BookTok.

I'm The Bookseller's comment editor. I write about tech and books for the likes of the Guardian and the BBC and my debut novel, The Charmed Life of Alex Moore (described as Bridget Jones meets "The Matrix") is out now.

I lead the marketing team to make sure all our campaigns across The Bookseller are creative, cohesive and reaching the right people. Before working at The Bookseller, I spent seven years at HarperCollins. I also run Female Leadership in Publishing (The FLIP) alongside my official role, a non-profit platform to inspire people in publishing with insight and honesty from brilliant women.

In my role I plan campaigns across The Bookseller and The Stage, working to grow and retain our audiences. I hold an MA in Creative Writing from SHU, which means I am just as likely to be found scribbling a short story as I am planning a campaign. I'm originally from Pune, India, and enjoy reading Marathi literature as much as English.

Before that I was a pizza chef/bartender (the juggling skills still come in handy).

I also spent 10 years practising as a criminal barrister. My first job in the media was as a reporter for William Reed, publisher of The Grocer
