Describe your role
My role is publisher at Endeavour Press—the UK’s leading independent digital publisher. I am responsible for contracting books and then liaising with authors and agents as titles go through each stage of the digital publishing process. We specialise in genre fiction including romance, historical fiction, crime and thrillers, but we also have an extensive non-fiction and history list. I also launched and run our western imprint Pioneering Press.
What do you like best about your role?
Every day is different. The best thing about my job is that I get to do a little bit of everything: editorial, marketing and promotion, production. Each day brings a new and exciting challenge.
Which new titles are you working on at the moment?
To celebrate the CWA Dagger Awards 2016, we have been working in partnership with the CWA this week on our Virtual Crime Festival, which has proved a tremendous success. We are also very excited to be launching our new literary fiction imprint Odyssey Press later this month.
What skills do you need for your role?
Networking and developing good working relationships with others in the industry is an essential skill. Always keep in contact with people that you meet at events or launches—you never know when they might be able to help you, or vice versa. The digital publishing market is also extremely fast moving, so a certain level of flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly is key.
What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry?
Make sure that you do your research on the company that you’re applying to and always try to read at least one of the books that they publish. Then demonstrate that knowledge wherever possible, whether it be in your covering letter or when you get called for an interview. But most importantly, never give up.
