Leave it to Leaver

The last time The Bookseller interviewed Marcus Leaver, the security guard at Quarto’s London HQ couldn’t locate him. “Are you sure he’s at Quarto?”

No chance of that now, of course. Back then, in May 2012, Leaver had just joined the group as its chief operating officer and heir apparent to founder and c.e.o. Laurence Orbach. He may have expected a slower transition to the top job, but Orbach was ousted by rebel shareholders six months later, and Leaver became c.e.o. in December 2012. The revolt may have been unexpected, but there was a sense that things needed to change at the top.
