Innovation and diversification: the British Library Bookshop finds its niche

It’s one of the most famous literary landmarks in the country, so it might be a surprise to learn that, just 18 months ago, the British Library didn’t have a bookshop. Visitors wanting to buy something to read at the King’s Cross building had to turn to the gift shop instead. A changing clientele—from academics and researchers to people arriving for exhibitions and tourists wandering in from the Eurostar—meant there was a 50:50 split between books and gifts.
