Book chains around the world have experienced some rough times in recent years, and learned a lesson: if you want to survive despite customers deserting the high street and migrating in droves to online shopping, you need to up your game. And that is what they are doing - at least, most of them are. Cost-saving measures and the switch from the large superstore format to much smaller shop floors still prevail, but the search for and the implementation of workable day-to-day strategies is clearly bearing fruit.
