As 2016’s Books of the Year lists appear in the newspapers, we at The Bookseller rounded up all of the picks to look at the titles consistently being touted as potential Christmas gifts. When compiling the data, we took into account the ethnicity and gender of each book’s author and champion, as well as whether or not it was published by an independent press.

This year, there was a grand total of 1,020 titles (compared to 831 last year and 910 in 2014). Of those, just over a third (35.6%) were written by women, not far off the figure for the reviewers: 38% of contributors to “Books of the ...
