Audio download chart, September 2016: non-fiction excels

The Girl on the Train has cruised to a sixth straight month at the top of the Audio Download Top 20. Paula Hawkins’ thriller could easily hold the number one until the New Year now, with the release of the film adaptation boosting its “p” and “e” sales to dizzying heights, and the relative lack of impact the big Christmas gift titles will presumably have in audio format compared to print.

Stephen King’s It clawed its way into the chart after its release in audio format on 20th September. It claimed second place, boosted by an Audible Daily Deal and presumably helped by the fact that, 30 years after the book was first published, real-life murderous clowns now stalk the streets. Thanks, 2016.

Another chart stalwart, Professor Steve Peters’ The Chimp Paradox, rose to third place. The title has only missed out on one Audible chart to date, and has charted in the top 20 for the past 11 months—despite being released all the way back in January 2012. Non-fiction had its healthiest month since October 2015, with six titles in the top 20. The Chimp Paradox aside, Amy Schumer’s memoir The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo climbed nine places to sixth, while Yuval Noah Harari’s Homo Deus, William L Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion and Jon Ronson’s Lost at Sea all feature in the chart for the first time. The average audiobook listener appears to have atheistic tendencies: Dawkins has charted before, with The Selfish Gene in July.

Another chart returner is Rosamund Pike, the Hollywood actress who narrates Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Pike also read William Boyd’s Restless, which charted in the Audio Download Top 20 in July.
