Well, they are coming out thick and fast in the tablet market, aren't they? O2 and Dell are launching the Dell Streak just a week after the iPad comes out (4th June). O2 will sell the Android-based tablet exclusively in the UK through O2 stores and online at www.o2.co.uk and www.carphonewarehouse.com.
“The Dell Streak is a bold new class of product, something we wanted to bring to our customers first,” said Steve Alder, O2’s general manager, devices, in a press release quote that was no way at all completely made up by his PR team. “This means we can continue to offer our customers a range of the very best devices to make their lives a bit easier.”
Yeah, yeah, Steve. Anyway, the specs:
OS: Google Android
Processor: 1GHZ Qualcomm Snapdragon
3G, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth
5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual LED flash.
Expandable memory via Micro SD cards, up to 32GB capacity
5" touch screen
It has a smaller screen than the iPad (9"), and the memory maxes out at 32GB while the iPad tops out at 64GB. On the other hand, it is Android so it supports Flash, has a camera (with flash!) which the iPad doesn't. Interesting. Price, of course, will be the issue (see my previous post), but it will assuredly come in under the £429 that the cheapest iPad is going for. How much is the question. O2 and Dell will announce that closer to launch.
