Ask Tom Weldon what Penguin Random House’s most important assets are, and he’s very clear. The people. He’ll even identify the individuals. “Probably the most important person at Vauxhall Bridge Road [Random House’s offices] is Jeanette Slinger, the receptionist. If you want to make a book work in those offices, she is the greatest advocate.”

Speaking to The Bookseller eight months after taking the top job at PRH, it’s an intriguing statement, and a smart one. Ask him what his main focus has been since the merger and he’ll point to the staff.
