News that the total value of the printed book market declined in 2013 will not come as a surprise to many. The e-book market continued to entice new members last year—more than two million in the first nine months of the year (source: Nielsen/Kantar)—while the printed book market was always going to struggle to match a sexy 2012 in which E L James’ Fifty Shades trilogy sold in record-breaking numbers, the likes of which the industry had never seen.
