Hot 100 paperback writers

Seventy-eight fiction titles, up seven on last year; seven children's books, up one on last year; just 15 non-fiction titles, down eight on last year: these are just some of the stand out statistics from this year's list of the top 100 paperbacks published in 2008.

James Patterson appears five times, but three times with two co-authors—Michael Ledwidge twice and Howard Roughan once. Danielle Steel and John Grisham appear twice, as do the former "Richard & Judy" book club participants Dorothy Koomson and Jodi Picoult. The current President-elect of the United States of America, Barack Obama, also appears twice and is the only non-fiction author to do so. Counting first named authors only, 91 writers appear on the list, with as even a gender split as possible—the 46 males securing 51.8% of the Hot 100's total volume sales but 53.3% of the revenue.

Of the 91 authors on the list, 21 have been a member of an R&J book club, with 11 of these having adorned the show's Channel 4 sofa last year. Top of the pile is
Linwood Barclay's No Time for Goodbye (Orion). Relatively unknown in the UK before 2008—the Canadian author's humorous mystery series surrounding the science-fiction writer Zack Walker was never officially released in the UK—Cactus TV m.d. Amanda Ross bravely included his thriller in the 2008 Summer Read.

It sold 643,225 copies through Nielsen BookScan's Total Consumer Market last year, taking £3.4m through retailer tills. It sold an average of 42,000 copies a week during the eight weeks of the R&J Summer Read campaign—the highest of any R&J participant since the book club began in January 2004. This, and other successes, made Orion the top paperback publisher last year

Orion also had Julia Gregson's East of the Sun selected for the
2008 Summer Read, and it is 14th on the Hot 100 list. Those two titles alone would have ensured Orion a place in the Top 10 Publisher Revenue chart (right), which is based on TCM sales revenue in 2008. The publisher also enjoyed strong sales from the stalwarts on its books. Maeve Binchy's Christmas-themed short-story
collection This Year it Will Be Different, former R&J participant Kate Mosse's
Sepulchre and Ian Rankin's Rebus-retirement novel Exit Music all find a place in the top 20 with sales above the 250,000 copies mark in 2008.

Harlan Coben's The Woods and former Romantic Novel of the Year winner, Erica James' Tell it to the Skies—a member of the Asda book club last year—also appear for Orion. The latter participated in the weekly "£2.99 if you buy the Times" promotion at W H Smith last year—an increasingly popular promotion that catapulted many titles into their respective top 20s in 2008.

Also making the Hot 100 for Orion are Richard Hammond's On the Edge and Jennifer Worth's Call the Midwife. Consequently, although Orion has fewer titles in the chart than HarperCollins, the money spent on its nine titles last year was £1.3m more than that spent on
HarperCollins' 13.

HarperCollins had the same number of titles appear in 2007's Hot 100, with three of these coming in the form of misery memoirs from Harper Element. Just two from this imprint appear this year, with the supposed demise of the misery memoir much covered in the wider media. By best estimates, sales of misery memoirs in 2008 were down at least one-third on 2007. The top 20 within the genre last year sold a combined 1.3 million copies at a total market value of £6m, down 37.6% and 37.9% respectively on 2007. But any prophesising about the death of the misery memoir is perhaps a little premature given it is still a market worth eight figures in revenue terms.

Dealing with the débuts
Given the obvious positive impact an R&J seal of approval has on sales, and Amanda Ross' penchant for picking début novelists, it is perhaps no surprise that Sadie Jones' The Outcast (Vintage) finds a place in the top 10 with a sale of 306,371. Given that Barclay has been published before overseas, Jones could claim "best selling UK début of 2008" bragging rights.

Like Barclay, Markus Zusak has been published previously. His children's novel Fighting Ruben Wolfe was published by Scholastic in the UK in 2001, but Nielsen BookScan has recorded sales of just 149 copies. Combined sales of Zusak's The Book Thief (Black Swan), however, totalled 410,000
copies in 2008, with the mass-market adult edition selling 352,299 units for its place in the top 10. It's a feat made more impressive given he achieved it without the help of R&J.

Similarly well-deserved congratulations go to Fiona Neill's The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy (Arrow), a début which sold more than 280,000 copies through the TCM last year. The book, based on the author's "Slummy Mummy" column for the Times, never achieved a number one in any given week but has enjoyed consistent sales throughout 2008.
J L Carrell's début, meanwhile,
quenched the public's thirst for historical conspiracy with The Shakespeare Secret (Sphere) selling 214,932 copies last year.

R&J juggernaut has no brakes
If proof were needed of the longevity an appearance on the R&J sofa can provide, then you need look no further than number two on the list. Kate Morton's début, The House at Riverton (Pan) sold 575,000 copies in 2007. Although not quite matching those heights, her follow-up The
Forgotten Garden (Pan) sold just short of 400,000 copies last year despite only being on sale since June.

Dorothy Koomson, meanwhile, goes from strength to strength following her inclusion in the R&J Summer Read of 2006. The best selling author, previously on Piatkus' books, enjoys two entries in the Hot 100: Goodnight, Beautiful and The Chocolate Run. The latter was first published in 2004, but re-released to good effect by Sphere, clocking up 136,000 sales last year.

In total, £97.5m was spent on the 20,038,150 copies of the Hot 100 sold last year—8.5% of all sales through BookScan's TCM in volume terms. However, the latter figure is down 12.5% year-on-year. In 2008 only Barclay sold in excess of 400,000 copies, whereas seven titles reached this figure in 2007. That year was strong for paperbacks with Bill Bryson's Father's Day hit, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid (Black Swan) breaking the 400,000 mark, along with Ian McEwan's Atonement, among others. But they were beaten to number one by a 819,426 sale from the mass-market edition of R&J Book Club winner Jed Rubenfeld's The Interpretation of Murder (Headline Review). In 2008, due to the technicality that Bloomsbury's trade paperback edition of Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns (Bloomsbury) was published in 2007, its 610,000 sales are not valid in the Hot 100 of 2008.
Also, despite Barclay's big hit, the R&J Summer Read of 2008 didn't create sales to match those of 2007, with sales through the eight weeks of the series totalling 1.1 million copies in 2008, down 17.5% year-on-year.

Crossovers and prize-winners
In the children's market, a film adaptation helps John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (Definitions) into the top half of the table. Total sales across all editions of the novel measured almost 440,000 copies last year.

Stephenie Meyer had an incredibly strong 2008 and appears at number 41 with the second instalment in her "Twilight" vampire love saga, Eclipse (Atom). Over £6m was spent on Meyer's novels in the UK last year.

Both the above have obvious crossover appeal, the former dealing with the very serious subject of war-time Auschwitz and the latter chiming with "Buffy" and "Angel" fans on both sides of the Atlantic. For a book definitively aimed at a younger audience, one has to look to 64th position where Francesca Simon's Horrid Henry Robs the Bank (Orion) sits with a sale of 157,155 copies.

Prize winners are also in evidence on the list. Rose Tremain's Orange-Prize winner, The Road Home (Vintage), sold just over 200,000 copies last year. Although significantly lower than the sales of previous winner Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Half of a Yellow Sun (HarperCollins), which sold 385,000 copies in 2007, Adichie was helped by the R&J Book Club. Meanwhile, 2007 Man Booker Prize winner Anne Enright's The Gathering (Vintage) sold 144,174 copies in its mass-market format last year.

But missing from the list is the Costa Book of the Year winner. Stef Penney's The Tenderness of Wolves (Quercus) won in 2007, going on to sell 290,000 copies that year. Last year's winner, A L Kennedy's Day (Vintage), sold just 33,000 copies in its mass-market format in 2008.
